Unreadable video or rejected format

Why a file is skipped at upload (unsupported format, unreadable video, HEIC, encrypted ZIP), what is supported out of the box, and what to try.

When a file does not make it through the upload area, the Studio skips it without blocking the rest of the batch and gives the reason. Most of the time it is a format outside the list or an archive the browser cannot open. Here is each message, what it means, and what fixes it.

Reading the reason

After the upload, the summary shows N files skipped, the rest of the batch is not blocked. Click See those files: each skipped file appears with its reason. Dismiss hides the list. The valid files are already in the batch.

The messages and their fix

MessageCauseWhat to do
Unsupported formatThe file is not an MP4, MOV, M4V or WebM video (or, in photo mode, a JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or AVIF image). Lone audio files, GIFs, MKVs and AVIs fall here.Export again as MP4 (H.264 or HEVC, AAC sound) from your editing software or your phone.
Unreadable videoThe extension is right but the browser cannot read the file: truncated file, interrupted transfer, unusual codec.Check that the video plays elsewhere; if not, export it again. A file half-copied from a phone is often the culprit.
Unreadable photoThe image is corrupted or in a variant the browser ignores.Open it again and save it as JPEG or PNG.
This browser can't read HEIC: export the photo as JPEGThe Studio converts HEIC to JPEG at upload, but this browser cannot decode them.Export the photo as JPEG from Photos, or upload from Safari on a Mac.
Unreadable ZIP archiveThe ZIP is corrupted or is not one.Recreate the archive, or drop the videos directly.
Password-protected entryAn entry in the ZIP is encrypted.Unzip the archive on your computer and upload the folder.
Unsupported compressionThe ZIP uses a compression method other than "deflate" or "stored".Recreate the archive with standard compression, or upload the folder.
Decompression isn't available in this browserThe browser lacks the needed decompression.Unzip on your computer, or switch browsers.
Unreadable entryA file inside the ZIP is damaged.Upload the other files directly.

A ZIP holding no readable file shows … contains no readable file: check its contents.

What is supported out of the box

  • Videos shot vertically on a phone, including those whose orientation is stored in the metadata: the Studio reads them the right way up.
  • iPhone HDR sources (10-bit HEVC): they are analyzed and rendered correctly, and the Silence Remover keeps 10-bit HDR.
  • 4K videos and high frame rates (60 or 120 frames per second).
  • Files up to 12 GB.

Special cases per tool

  • Auto captions skips lone audio files with the message N audio files skipped: only videos get captions. Put the audio over a still image if you want to caption it.
  • Silence Remover and Clipping Omegle need an audio track: a silent video is flagged (No audio track: silences cannot be found, This recording has no audio track).
  • Clipping Omegle expects a screen recording with two webcams; on another kind of source, detection fails and the frames have to be placed by hand.
  • A folder only uploads the supported videos it holds, subfolders included; other files are ignored.

If the file plays everywhere except in the Studio

  1. Try the upload once more: an interrupted transfer leaves an incomplete file on the browser side.
  2. Export again as MP4 H.264 with AAC sound, the safest format.
  3. If the problem persists, contact support through the button at the bottom right of the Studio, giving the file name and the message shown.
