Caption a video in 3 minutes

Upload a spoken video, pick a style, confirm the placement, transcribe, fix a word and export the captioned file.

Video coming soonA short video of this tutorial will be added here. Until then, the steps below are all you need.

Auto captions transcribes the speech and burns animated captions into the video. Style and placement are set once for the whole batch; the transcript is corrected before the render, never after.

Before you start

  • A spoken video in MP4, MOV, M4V or WebM.
  • Credits: 1 credit per started minute of rendered video. The transcription itself counts against the monthly minutes of your plan (30 min during the trial).
  • "Video service ready" shown in the tool.

Steps

  1. Open Auto captions and drop the video into "Videos to caption". Click Continue to the settings.
  2. In the Configure step, choose a Caption style: "Neon conversation" (three words, a neon color per voice, glow and outline), "Plain" (white, crisp outline, no animation) or "Impact" (one word at a time, very large). "Appearance" lets you adjust the font, the Text size and the Words shown at once. Click Confirm the style.
  3. Under "Placement in the frame", drag the sample caption across the preview frame, with the mouse or a finger; Change the preview frame shows another moment. One placement applies to every video in the batch. Click Confirm the batch placement.
  4. If needed, open "Language, speakers and detailed settings": Transcription language ("Automatic detection" by default), Detect the speakers automatically to color each voice, and Also export the SRT and VTT files. Then Continue to the transcription.
  5. In the Transcribe step, click Transcribe. Only the audio track goes to Deepgram; nothing is burned in at this point. If a voice stays "unidentified", listen to its sample under "Match the speakers" and set its color (Female voice, Male voice).
  6. Click Review the captions. In the Review step, the caption strip scrolls under the video; filter on Uncertain or sort with Needs review first: doubtful words are tagged "uncertain". Click a caption and correct its text; the preview is identical to the export.
  7. For a word misheard several times, use Search the transcript, the With field, then Replace everywhere. A useless caption can be hidden without being deleted.
  8. Click Continue to the export, then Start rendering: the "Cost: …" line shows the credits and your balance. Confirm. The video service burns the captions in without touching the frame rate, resolution, colours or sound of the original.
  9. Download the file (Download) or the archive (Download everything (ZIP)). If you fix a word after the render, the Re-render the changed video button appears.

Expected result

A video with a neutral name (vid_….mp4) and burned-in captions, in the confirmed style and position, plus the SRT and VTT files written next to it if you asked for them. Cost: 1 credit per started minute, charged when the render starts; a failed render is refunded.
